Educational services

The guided tour begins at the Visitor Centre opposite the car park. The first stops on the tour are the road below the camp wall, the top of the quarry and the memorial park on the site of the former SS camp. The tour then continues inside the former prisoner camp. This route enables visitors to understand the route taken by the prisoners, to engage critically with the perspectives of the perpetrators, and to reflect on how the concentration camp was viewed by the wider population during the Nazi era. Confronting the perspectives of victims, perpetrators and local people is an essential feature of the tour.

The guides are all specially trained educators. Our education training places great emphasis on encouraging interaction and openness among visitors. This results in tours that offer a balance of historical information and group discussion about what that history means.

Tour with workshop

This educational package combines the guided tour with a workshop. There is a choice of three topics for the workshop: Life stories; literary approaches to Mauthausen (available in German language only); or the permanent exhibition ‘The Mauthausen Concentration Camp 1938–1945’.

Every hour on the hour, the ORF III documentary “The Mauthausen Concentration Camp” is screened in the film rooms at the Visitor Center.

The tour explores the history of the Gusen concentration camp, a branch camp of Mauthausen situated around 4km away. The Gusen concentration camp was as large as the main camp in Mauthausen. The tour also covers topics such as the post-war use of the former camp grounds in Gusen as a housing estate and the question of how the Nazi past has been dealt with up to the present day.
