How did an Afro-Caribbean civilian become a prisoner at Mauthausen?  What did he witness?  How did he survive?  This presentation answers these questions through the story of Lionel Romney.  His wartime experience, as one of the few members of the African diaspora who experienced Mauthausen, is told partly in his own words through the oral history he recorded with his daughter, the presenter.

Mary Romney-Schaab was born in New York City, but her roots are in the Caribbean island nation of St. Maarten.   A retired educator, she spent over 40 years teaching English as a second language in Madrid, New York, Barcelona, and Connecticut (USA).  She has master's degrees in Instructional Media, in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and in Spanish. Among her interests are languages, oral history, the Holocaust, and African Diaspora history. She has published in these areas.
