The main task of the Scientific Advisory Board Mauthausen is to advise the management team of the Mauthausen Memorial in all academic and conceptual matters. For example, developing recommendations on the remit of the memorial museum or reviewing plans put forward by the Mauthausen Memorial team.

The Scientific Advisory Board is made up of eight members from international and interdisciplinary backgrounds. During its inaugural meeting on 15 September 2017, the members elected Dr Bertrand Perz as chair of the board and Director Léontine Meijer-van Mensch as his deputy. Perz is the Deputy Director of the Institute of Contemporary History at the University of Vienna, Meijer-van Mensch Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin.

"In Bertrand Perz, an experienced historian has been entrusted as chair of the Scientific Advisory Board Mauthausen, who has been dealing with the history of the Mauthausen concentration camp intensively for many years now", explained DDr Barbara Glück, Director of the Mauthausen Memorial.

The Scientific Advisory Board will carry out its duties independently and without direction, with each member having an equal say on the board.
